Semantic Strikethroughs in XHTML
Use the <del> tag to indicate removed content. This is semantically correct, and most browsers render it as a strikethrough.
Often the <ins> tag goes somewhere nearby, to indicate the new content that replaces the old. The W3C offers this example in the ins and del section of the the HTML 4 spec:
A Sheriff can employ <del>3</del><ins>5</ins> deputies.
A Sheriff can employ 35 deputies.
Today I found myself in need of a strikethrough, and the search results I got weren't very helpful, so I wanted to get this posted for any other lost souls out there.
One final, subtle point is that del should be used when you actually are removing content, and not just to get a strikethrough, though I'm hard-pressed to come up with any interpretation of the strike other than "removed".

This is the sort of bone-headed tag nazism that can be expected from stone wankers who also think there is no valid reason to display text with a strike through it. "Either display it properly or don't display it at all." I had in English teacher who felt the same way about the use of parenthesis (don't use them, she admonished - make proper sentences or leave that bit out). I read the recommendation to "use instead" as "use the delete key instead." Like some code wonk somewhere, somewhen, should have that sort of stylistic control over how text is displayed on a Web site. Some code gets deprecated for no good reason, nothing besides some crybaby somewhere doesn't like it & has no better reason for disliking it than because "I just don't" or "it's ugly." I have a news flash for all those fainting hearts, there's a whole lot of ugliness out there and it isn't going anywhere, any time soon. They need to shut the fuck up act like adults instead of whiny crybabies. Meanwhile, they need to deprecate their own pointless, mischievous meddling.
One more thing - an interpretation? "Under partial censure." If it was under complete censure, use of the delete key would be entirely appropriate.
A suggested use? Using it to cross off days or dates on the current month's calendar, to make that calendar more user-friendly. That and a million-and-one other things that might strike someone's fancy, there's just no good reason to deprecate or fail to support or , especially since seems linked to concurrent use of .
The 'crossing off' is a good use of a strikethrough without indicating deletion. Thanks for the info.
